Badaguish, Aviemore – True Story – our favourite place in the world. What’s not to love? Mountain lodges; crazy mountain-bikers; sled-dogs howling; Jack Wolfskinners and if there is snow – we all turn into Eddie the Eagle!
Aviemore, more, more!
Everything in the small town of Aviemore revolves around outdoor activities. During the high season hundreds of thousands of visitors are pulled in by the spectacular nature. Hiking, canoeing, gorge walking and, of course, mountain biking. In the Winter this place transforms into a frozen wonderland, with skiing, snowboarding and sled-dog races. Where do you start with just an eight day adventure? So many options. Aviemore is atmospheric, it’s beauty captures everybody as soon as you pull off the A9.
What is a Badaguish?
An ancient mythical Scottish creature’ we wanted to say, but that would be a proper lie. Badaguish is a magnificent outdoor space in the Glenmore Forest, ten minutes out of Aviemore, in the Cairngorms. Think big wooden chalet style lodges, wooden eco-pods [formerly wigwams], barbeque bothy huts, flying foxes, high ropes courses and loads of space for outdoor sports. Mainly though, we know it as our ‘home away from home’.
We chose Badaguish, because every time we go, we feel like we can exhale. Every time we take our young people, they don’t want to leave, and neither do we. The people who work there have become an extended family with social and moral views of the world that align with our own. Like us, they don’t see limits for young autistic and disabled people, they believe in the therapy of the outdoor world and we are always welcome.
Adventure is within reach everywhere.
Badaguish is the centre of everything for us. Whether we are skiing with Josef and the gang at Disability Snowsports UK; abseiling, canoeing and gorge walking with the very wonderful Gemma at Able 2 Adventures; whittling, fire-starting and building shelters with our favourite bushcraft and survival folk at Primal; hurtling along through mud and hairy coos with Emma and her team at Quad Treks Aviemore or building rafts out of barrels and playing paintball with Keith at Craggan our young people just love it and nothing is ever too much trouble. We like the community here, they always support each other, we feel invited in. There’s always somebody ready to adventure. There are so many things to do here, Scott at Badaguish still sounds excited, even after many years living in Aviemore. Random fact…..The Dark Knight Rises
…. we cannot promise you will meet Christian Bale, but, when the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises was released, The Cairngorms were instantly recognisable as a CIA plane, soon to be hijacked by supervillain Bane, soars across the Scottish Highlands. The Cairngorms were also chosen for the latest Bond movie – No Time to Die, which is 007 Daniel Craig’s last outing.
